"Sprudels on Sunday - Crack Colored Team to Play Locals. - The Richmond team next Sunday will meet the West Baden Sprudels at Athletic Park. The record held by the Sprudels assures a good fast game. The American Giants, classed as the fastest colored team in the United States, were defeated on their own grounds in Chicago in a series of games by the Sprudels. Pitcher Steel-Arm Taylor of the Sprudels, who won two of the five games of the series will pitch the game against Richmond and the same lineup used at Chicago will play here. Taylor is considered the equal of pitchers in the National and American leagues and the only thing which prevents his being signed up is the fact that he is colored. The Sprudels carry fourteen men. Four pitchers were used in the series with the Giants. Taylor pitched the first and won it. Simpson and Miller pitched the second and lost it. Williams pitched the third and won and Taylor pitched the fourth and won't. The Giants celebrated their winning of the California Winter League pennant by unfurling the pennant on this occasion. The Sprudels have defeated Elwood, Kokomo and the A.B.C. team of Indianapolis, which is considered the fastest semi-professional team in that city. Every spring the Sprudels play a series of games with the Pittsburg Nationals and Indianapolis American team at West Baden. On next Saturday the Sprudels will play Newcastle and their star twirler Taylor will pitch. He will also pitch at the Richmond game on Sunday. The lineups for the Richmond-Sprudel game will be given later."

"West Baden Sprudels Play Here Sunday - Many Local Teams Have No Games Scheduled for That Date. - Judging from present indications, only one or two baseball games will be played by local team next Sunday. The main attraction Sunday will be the contest between Richmond and the West Baden Sprudels at Athletic Park. Outside of this headliner no games probably will be played in this vicinity. The Marshallettes and Senators have been unable to get games, and their affairs are at a standstill. The grandstand on the field used by the Murrays at Cambridge City blew down in the recent wind and rainstorm, and no effort has been made for the erection of a new one. The team also has been unable to get a game."

"Expect Fast Game With Sprudels Here - Colored Aggregation is Said to Be One of the Best. - It is expected that the fastest game which has been or will be played this season at Athletic Park will be that of Sunday afternoon when Richmond meets the West Baden Sprudels, a colored team, said to be one of the three best colored aggregations in the country. The game will be called promptly at 3 o'clock. The Sprudels are the equal of the Lincoln Giants of New York and defeated the American Giants of Chicago in a series of games. R.N. Husson, secretary of the Richmond ball club has received positive assurance that Taylor, their fastest pitcher, will hurl in the game here Sunday. Besides seeing a crackerjack baseball game Secretary Husson says the spectators will be given a string of comedy from two Sprudel men on the coach line. Newcastle has canceled her game with the Sprudels for Saturday and it is believed this action was taken because Newcastle must win her game with Cambridge City on Sunday. The Sprudels will come here direct from West Baden arriving Sunday morning and will not leave until Monday morning. The Richmond and Sprudels lineups for the Sunday's game are as follows: Richmond - Slarp third base, Valentine left field, Clarke catcher, Dahl centerfield, Allison right field, Coblentz second base, Wilcoxen pitcher, Walters pitcher and Beard utility. Sprudels, Shiveley left field, Brown centerfield, Clarke shortstop, Lewis third base, Ben Taylor first base, Kindle second base, McMurray catcher, Bingham right field, J. Taylor pitcher, and C.I. Taylor utility."

"Big Crowd Expected - To Witness Game at Athletic Park Tomorrow. - All is in readiness for Sunday's game at Athletic Park between the Sprudels of West Baden and Richmond. Taylor, the pitcher with the renowned reputation will be on the ground for the visitors and Wilcoxen or Walters will pitch for the home guards. Taylor is reputed to be the equal of National and American League pitchers and good work on his part in the box is expected by fans who will attend the game."

"Loose Play Gives West Baden Sprudels Game - Support Not Given Wilcoxen in First Part of Contest. - Taylor Some Pitcher. - Sprudels, 5; Richmond, 4. - Richmond suffered defeat at the hands of the West Baden Sprudels, the best colored team in the state, Sunday afternoon at Athletic Park by the score of 5 to 4. Taking a diagnosis of the game, however, the defeat was a victory for the local team. The score would have been different in all probability had Wilcoxen, who pitched the first five innings for Richmond been given the support which was later handed to Walters, who succeeded him in the box. In the first five innings the Sprudels ran away with the Richmond team and played ball all around their heads. Richmond's loose playing gave the visitors five runs. Richmond rooters had blanched faces, and it looked like a shut-out for the locals. In the sixth inning Walters was put in the box, and immediately the attitude of the Richmond players changed. Listlessness was followed by application to the work. Spryness and energy took the place of indifference and carelessness. The walkaway by the Sprudels was stopped, and although Steel Arm Taylor, West Baden's famed pitcher, continued to throw his various kinds of curves, Richmond succeeded in scoring four times. It is probable that an attempt will be made to get another game with the Sprudels."

"The manager of the West Baden Sprudels declares that Richmond has the fastest of any semi-professional team played by the Sprudels in Indiana. The Sprudels have played Munci, Kokomo, French Lick Plutos, Alexandria, the A.B.C.s of Indianapolis, Washington, Princeton and Vincennes. Last fall the Sprudels played a series of games with the Cincinnati Reds. George Suggs pitched for the Reds, and Taylor who hurled for the visitors here Sunday pitched for the Sprudels. The Sprudels got two hits off Suggs, and the Reds got five hits off Taylor. The Richmond team is negotiating for a series of games with the Sprudels this fall. It will consist of six or seven games played here and at West Baden."
